The Story of the Mandala
A work from June 2025. As I drew, the centre began to look to me like the rising sun of Japan’s flag. Drawing on, I felt indignant that we Japanese have been robbed of our pride in who we are.
“To love your country is to love yourself.” I realised that I had loved this country all along… and the word that came to me then was “Iyasaka” — may it flourish ever more.
This country — no, the whole world, the whole earth — is at a great turning point. I want a life I decide and choose myself, not one lived at others’ bidding. And I want a world where everyone lives as themselves, with confidence. That is what I felt.
